Sustainable rocking chair

As part of my involvement in the Durable Technology minor, I designed and developed a material-efficient rocking chair named “Rocking Green.” I focused on creating a chair that embodies both environmental responsibility and ergonomic comfort.

Project Overview

The “Rocking Green” chair is designed with the modern sedentary lifestyle in mind. Recognizing the challenges of prolonged sitting, particularly the strain it puts on the body, I aimed to create a chair that promotes active sitting and movement through its rocking design. The chair also features a knee rest that encourages dynamic sitting postures, further supporting user comfort and movement.

Sustainability

The chair was designed to minimize material waste, utilizing only a single sheet of beech wood for its construction. By carefully optimizing the layout of the parts, I reduced excess material. This efficient use of resources ensures that the chair maintains a low environmental footprint. The use of durable materials like beech wood and a replaceable, washable cushion ensures longevity and adaptability over time.

Production Costs

Manufacturing the “Rocking Green” chair is designed to be efficient, with a production time of approximately 60 minutes per unit. Key processes include CNC milling, hand finishing for precise detailing, and applying a lacquer finish to enhance durability. The estimated production cost per chair is 100€, including labor and material costs, making it both cost-effective and sustainable.

Ergonomics

The chair’s design adheres to ergonomic standards, with a seat height of 480mm, back angle of 9°, and a seat angle of 3°. These dimensions, combined with the chair’s rocking function, ensure comfort during extended use while encouraging movement. The optional knee rest provides an active seating option, allowing the user to switch between different postures effortlessly.

Personal Impact

This project was quite personal, as I designed the chair with my own experiences of chronic back pain in mind. I understand the importance of a good chair for both comfort and health, and this inspired me to create a product that could bring relief and enjoyment to others. My approach to design reflects my broader perspective on sustainability and innovation, aiming to create products that improve daily life while minimizing environmental impact.

Through this project, I honed my skills in material efficiency, ergonomic design, and sustainable production, ultimately creating a piece that balances aesthetics, comfort, and responsibility. “Rocking Green” represents my commitment to creating thoughtful, user-centered designs that contribute to a better world.
