Generating Motivation for Diertary Behaviour Change
As part of my Master’s program in Industrial Design at the Technical University of Eindhoven, I conducted a research project focused on leveraging AI to tackle obesity by motivating dietary behavior change. My project, titled Generating Motivation for Dietary Behavior Change Using GPT-4, explored the potential of AI-generated motivational messages to support and sustain healthy eating habits.
The healthcare industry faces growing challenges due to a global shortage of professionals and the increasing prevalence of obesity-related diseases. I sought to explore how conversational AI, like GPT-4, could be used to alleviate this strain by generating personalized motivational messages that align with the Behaviour Change Wheel framework. My research compared AI-generated messages with handcrafted ones and examined how AI can aid professionals in reinforcing behavior change after dietary interventions.
The project involved developing and refining a prompt to generate tailored motivational text messages that addressed specific behavior change techniques. I collaborated with Dutch dieticians who evaluated the effectiveness of these AI-generated messages using a modified version of the APEASE criteria. The results demonstrated that GPT-4 holds promise in generating effective motivational content, though human oversight remains critical, especially in contexts requiring empathy and nuanced social support.
Through this study, I gained valuable experience in AI integration, prompt engineering, quantitative research methods, and data analysis. Additionally, I deepened my understanding of the ethical implications of AI in healthcare, as well as its potential to scale personalized interventions cost-effectively.
