Strategy & Technology Management
As part of my Master’s program in Industrial Design, I completed a course on Strategy & Technology Management within the Innovation Management curriculum. The elective course took me beyond my design focus, offering deep insights into how organizations strategically align technology with business objectives. The course covered essential topics such as Exploitation & Exploration, Corporate Entrepreneurship, Open Innovation, Innovation Ecosystems, Dominant Design, and Profiting from Innovation, which were examined through six exams and four comprehensive papers.
My group research assignment for the course was centered on Open Innovation, with a specific focus on the role of universities as innovation actors in major innovation ecosystems. Our research explored how Brainport Eindhoven and Mainport Rotterdam—two critical innovation hubs in the Netherlands—utilized open innovation to fuel regional growth. We conducted patent analysis to measure collaborative innovation between the technical universities of Eindhoven (TU/e) and Delft (TU Delft) and drew insights into how these collaborations influenced economic growth.
This paper enhanced my understanding of how corporate and academic partnerships can serve as a catalyst for innovation and economic development. Moreover, it provided me with a nuanced understanding of how regional innovation ecosystems differ in their approach to open innovation and how such differences shape their growth trajectories. This project not only honed my research and analysis skills but also deepened my knowledge of managing technological strategies in a business context.
Through this course, I have gained valuable expertise that enhances my ability to strategically bridge innovation and design within organizational ecosystems.
