Welcome
This is the portfolio of Joris Raaphorst, an Amsterdam based, strategic design engineer that recently finalized the master Industrial Design at the TU/e after working as design engineer at VanBerlo for three years.
My Story
Please allow me introduce myself.
After three years of designing and engineering physical products at VanBerlo with a fixed contract, I complemented my competences by mastering in the science of strategic organizational transformations. My specialty focusses on the rift between innovative exploration and the execution and exploitation of found solutions, and the differences and challenges of building or acquiring capabilities. For which the acquisition of VanBerlo by Accenture served as a primary case-study.
In addition I have studied complexity theory, as stakeholder alignment and complicated product ecosystems are inevitably intertwined. Relying on qualitative business dynamics methods, I believe to have found a way to effectively navigate the twilight between the hard engineering and soft multi-stakeholder challenges.
I prefer end-to-end involvement, as successful innovations require a successful alignment of business model, manufacturing and user-centered design. Because I have built proficiency in the process from idea on a napkin to production, I bring the tools, knowledge and experience to constructively guide businesses towards the next generation of products.
How I am perceived by others…

To whom it may concern, at VanBerlo I collaborated with Joris both on projects and on our internal bussiness development (comprising the analysis of our VanBerlo network, spoting new business opportunities including follow-up). Within this collaboration, I admired the drive and ambition that Joris showed me. He is the type of guy that is self-starting and when assigning him to a task, for sure it will result in discussion on the scope and relevance of the topic, but in parallel to efficiently working on the task in a very structured way. Joris will make sure all needed information gets in and will reach out to both our internal and external network to get in touch and make sure that things are happening and moving in the right way. Please feel free to reach out to me for any questions or further information.

Sad to see Joris leave our company as he was a respected member of our engineering team. I saw Joris grow both as a person and as a professional in the 3 years we where working together. Joris started at VanBerlo straight from school and had a lot to learn, but he was more than eager to do so. He developed to colleague who was able to work well in our teams and added more and more value each year. As a person he was always in for a chat and a joke and adapted well to all the changes in the last years, he is simply a very pleasant person to work with.
I wish you all the best in your studies and keep asking “WHY”?

During his internship at the Industry X (PES) Product Engineering Services I’ve experienced Joris as a very pleasant, structural, knowledgeable and persistent colleague. Right from the start he has been able to work independent with minimal guidance in a very structured and organized manner. He has a clear view on what he wants to achieve and will go into great detail to provide the right theoretical background, proven methodologies and structure to move forward and apply a ’test fast, fail fast’ methodology to keep refining his approach until he gets it right. Joris has done 2 back-to-back internships on a very difficult subject within our team to provide more synergy and identify the value between different silo’s in the organization and how those silo’s can work together and benefit from each other. Joris has a good strategic mindset and can see the big picture while working towards his goals.

I got to know Joris in the context of two larger projects during his student-career with IPO Windesheim, in which a product is developed and delivered to a real client. These projects both intended to engage students in multi-disciplinary team work. I have further coached, worked with and observed Joris in various classes as a lecturer at Windesheim Zwolle.
Joris brings to the project his expertise as a student of Engineering, but has shown an admirable talent in moderating the dialogue between experts of different professions and cultural backgrounds e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Economics and Industrial Product Design. He is an engineer (bachelor level) who has specialized in innovation, system approach and creative workshops facilitation.
Joris brings a profound empathy for the ‘end users’ – the people that the project result is aimed at, and significantly contributes to the team process by being able to include and adapt all the members’ contributions into the total encompassing design. Joris is always open and welcoming, and his sharp reasoning often brings along an ‘unthought of’ insight or break through. A surprising point of view, carefully derived from original but extremely useful literature or research makes that his project are not ‘just good’ but often excellent. I have observed Joris developing his ‘young professional’ competences ahead of his classmates: he has a sense of ‘project ownership’ and is self-relying in his project approach, often helping team-mates organizing the work or the timing and tone of voice in communication to stakeholders.
Being asked to comment on Joris’ contribution and qualities, I have not the least hesitation to name him an outstanding personality and quite talented in finding both creative and realistic solutions. I highly value his design visions. Personally, I enjoy Joris’ truly professional behavior, his fine humor and his way of thinking which at the right time becomes a source of creativity for his team. I observe he is respected by his team members and gets esteemed for his empathy and enthusiast dedication. I think these qualities are what help him deliver a successful project time after time. I was not surprised to hear of his interests in a master program and am confident he will be a successful candidate who will enrich his professional potential during these years.

I’ve got to know Joris as an open and energetic guy, who is not only an eager but also a quick learner. He is keen to pick up responsibility, within his own competence as a design engineer, but also outside of that, for instance by supporting and engaging in business development. During the 3 years he worked at VanBerlo, he became one of the go to design engineers for 3D CAD modelling in CREO. With his modelling skills and built-up technical knowledge of the FMCG field, he greatly contributed to many of the projects for Reckitt, the account I am responsible for. Though it is a loss to see Joris leave VanBerlo, his choice to engage in a Masters at the TU/e is an example of his eager and entrepreneurial attitude.

Joris is one of our best graduates. Driven, as evidenced with extracurricullar work both technically (composites for the Nuna 9) and socially (function at ZHTC, fundraiser). Joris has boundless energy and focus for the task at hand. He is also a very nice guy, easy to coach and cooperate with. His graduation work was excellent, and I have no doubt a future employer will add a very worthwhile colleague to his team. Bon voyage, Joris!

To whom it may concern, during the 3 years at VanBerlo Joris showed to be a hard worker with an attitude to never give up. He has great skills in 3D CAD modeling (CREO surfacing), which allow him to quickly make great CAD models, engineering a product in every detail or which he applies to quickly make detailed functional prototypes (for example by 3D printing). His hands-on approach helps a lot in the phase where quick mock-ups and testing is needed to speed up the decision process. He grew as person understanding limits and possibilities where he also grew a lot in the Engineering and design thinking process. Joris communicates very well and works with other disciplines. He is a very creative person with a hands-on attitude. He dives into a challenge with his sleeves rolled up. I would describe Joris as an open, social and friendly team player who is easy to work with. Overall I have a very positive view of Joris and wish him the best of luck for all his future. I would sincerely recommend him.
Kind regards,

It is my pleasure writing a recommendation about Joris. During his Master’s internship in Accenture, he demonstrated creativity, diligence and soft-skills to drive alignment among multidisciplinary teams, creating frameworks for collaborations and areas of improvements across functions during and after M&A. His project helped identifying strategic overlaps and synergy opportunities. I definitely wish him a bright career and look forward to seeing his future accomplishments.
