Welcome

This is the portfolio of Joris Raaphorst, an Amsterdam based, strategic design engineer that recently finalized the master Industrial Design at the TU/e after working as design engineer at VanBerlo for three years.

My Story

Please allow me introduce myself.

After three years of designing and engineering physical products at VanBerlo with a fixed contract, I complemented my competences by mastering in the science of strategic organizational transformations. My specialty focusses on the rift between innovative exploration and the execution and exploitation of found solutions, and the differences and challenges of building or acquiring capabilities. For which the acquisition of VanBerlo by Accenture served as a primary case-study.

In addition I have studied complexity theory, as stakeholder alignment and complicated product ecosystems are inevitably intertwined. Relying on qualitative business dynamics methods, I believe to have found a way to effectively navigate the twilight between the hard engineering and soft multi-stakeholder challenges.

I prefer end-to-end involvement, as successful innovations require a successful alignment of business model, manufacturing and user-centered design. Because I have built proficiency in the process from idea on a napkin to production, I bring the tools, knowledge and experience to constructively guide businesses towards the next generation of products.

How I am perceived by others…

From Brief to Contract: Abductive Initiation for Dynamic Projects

From Brief to Contract: Abductive Initiation for Dynamic Projects In this research project, I explored the intersection between innovation, project management, and design thinking. My study focused on understanding how dynamic projects, often characterized by uncertain outcomes, can be initiated effectively, particularly in the early stages when problem framing and alignment between stakeholders are crucial. I sought to bridge the gap between problem owners and solution providers by investigating how reframing and abductive reasoning could be leveraged to improve project outcomes. Many organizations thrive on exploiting existing market positions but struggle to innovate when facing the unknown. In particular, I...

Design Innovation Strategies

Design Innovation Strategies In the Design Innovation Strategies course, I collaborated with an amazing team to create SecretAIry—an AI-powered plug-in for learning management systems like Canvas. This tool aims to reduce student stress by automating the organization of meeting notes, tasks, and schedules. With 70% of students willing to test the product, SecretAIry shows strong potential for improving educational efficiency. Key Insights: We focused on simplifying student workflows by developing a user-friendly, AI-driven system to organize academic information. The concept was validated through surveys and interviews with educators and students, revealing a clear demand for more efficient academic tools. SecretAIry...

A word about complexity

Our perception of reality is shaped by our limited senses, evolved for survival, which filter out much of the true complexity of the world. While science helps us uncover universal truths, our subjective experiences and biases influence how we interpret reality, making each individual's understanding uniquely different.
